Hewitson
Hewitson was founded in 1998. From his extensive travels and vast experience of working and traveling the world of wine, owner and wine maker Dean Hewitson came to the realization that South Australia's strength lays in its very old vineyards, many of them dry-grown from the 19th Century and therefore the oldest of their type in the world.
It is no coincidence that these vineyards are in the vicinity of Dean's birth place. They are the in regions of Barossa Valley, Eden Valley, McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills - all famous in their own right and help make up the greater region, The Adelaide Super Zone.
For its first decade, Hewitson operated out of the Old Dairy Cold Store on the edge of Adelaide's CBD where all the milk for the City of Adelaide was delivered and distributed. Built in the late 1800s with thick, cork-lined walls and a naturally cool environment, the Old Dairy was a home to cellar and mature Hewitson's fine wine.
By 2007, Dean realized the business had outgrown this wonderful old building. Understanding progress, he and his wife Lou acquired 17 acres of prime vineyard at Dorrien alongside The Para River in the heart of the Barossa Valley. A new winery was purpose-built from the ground up ready to take the 2008 vintage. This has become Hewitson's new home.
